The High Commissioner of the Republic of Mozambique, Santos Álvaro, presents his Letters of Credence to the President of Malta

PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

The High Commissioner of the Republic of Mozambique, Santos Álvaro, presented his Letters of Credence to President George Vella at the Presidential Palace, Valletta.

President Vella referred to the cordial relations between Malta and Mozambique as well as to the willingness to explore new avenues of cooperation in the coming months. The President added that Malta attaches great importance to Mozambique as a regional partner with whom we can cooperate in maintaining peace and good governance as the basis for development. He referred to his meeting with President Nyusi in May 2023 held in New York, on the margins of a UN Security Council Special Session dedicated to civilians in armed conflict which both Presidents addressed. President Vella stated that Malta welcomes the constructive relationship between Mozambique and the European Union as a mutually beneficial partnership and supports the renewed Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Partnership Agreement now called the ‘Samoa Agreement’.

The High Commissioner expanded upon his intentions to intensify business and trade relations between the two sides and identified energy cooperation as an avenue with notable potential. High Commissioner Álvaro explained a series of reforms underway in his country, mostly addressing security, stability, and economic growth. He referred in particular to ongoing efforts to curb terrorism and radicalisation in the Northern regions, in close collaboration with neighbouring countries.

Cooperation in the Commonwealth also featured in the exchanges, also in preparation for the upcoming Heads of Government meeting that Samoa will be hosting in October 2024.
