The Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia, Ligia Margarita Quessep Bitar, presented her Letters of Credence to President George Vella at the Presidential Palace, Valletta.
President Vella pointed out that in the twenty-seven years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and despite the geographic distance, Malta and Colombia benefited from excellent ties built on reciprocal trust and understanding. He observed that there is ample potential to increase connectivity, promote intercultural exchanges and enhance people-to-people contacts.
On a broader scale, Malta also looks forward to enhancing relations at the regional level, particularly through strengthened European Union engagement with Colombia. The ongoing negotiations towards the establishment of an EU-Colombia Partnership and Cooperation Agreement will enhance our trade and commercial ties further. Malta will continue supporting the EU’s active role aimed at restoring lasting peace and stability not only in Colombia, but also across Latin America.
Ambassador Quessep Bitar gave an overview of the ongoing political reforms underway in Colombia, aimed primarily at the full restoration of peace and stability across the country. She also added that strong records in the education and health sectors make the country very competitive in the region. On the commercial front, Colombia could be of interest in terms of importation of wood, flowers and coffee. There is great interest in the study of the English Language, with Malta becoming a favourite destination among students at different levels. The International Maritime Law Institute hosted by Malta is also a very highly reputed entity for Colombian professionals in this field.
