The Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Rashad Fakhraddin oglu Aslanov, presented his Letters of Credence to President George Vella at the Presidential Palace in Valletta.
In welcoming the Ambassador to Malta, President Vella observed that bilateral relations between Malta and Azerbaijan have always been good since they were established in 1995. Since then, Azerbaijan has become a more important partner both at national and European Union levels. Beyond the energy sector, cooperation can be expanded onto other areas such as student and cultural exchanges. Tourism flows between our countries could serve as potential catalysts to strengthen people-to-people contacts.
On the situation in the Karabakh region, Malta remains supportive of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and stresses the need for full return to constructive engagement between Armenia and Azerbaijan to the normalisation of relations.
Ambassador Aslanov underlined his intention to hold frequent visits to Malta with a view to increasing contacts in a number of areas. He mentioned the maritime sector, port connectivity, and economic and business exchanges. The Ambassador also briefed President Vella on the latest developments related to contacts with Armenia.
