Mrs Miriam Vella née Grima was born on 2 September 1947 in Zejtun and studied at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Malta. She is a mother of three children, Claire, George and Elaine and grandmother of seven. Mrs Vella speaks fluently Maltese and English and has also an advanced understanding of the Italian language.

Entirely dedicating her life to family responsibilities, Mrs Vella provided also administrative support to her husband’s medical profession and general practice as family doctor. Furthermore, she was instrumental in assisting him throughout his extended political career and in his parliamentary and Ministerial duties.

In her official capacity of First Lady, Mrs Vella is now active in the social and charity spheres through her participation in the supervisory council of the Malta Community Chest Fund (MCCF) and chairpersonship of several committees within the same organisation.

The Malta Community Chest Fund provides financial, material and professional support to people experiencing difficulties because of severe chronic illness, including cancer. The Malta Community Chest Fund also supports persons with disability, people in poverty and NGOs working with vulnerable groups.

Concurrent to her work in the MCCF, Mrs Vella is also serving as Patron to Hospice Malta, which offers its services to patients and their families, every year. This work is carried out through a professional multi-disciplinary team targeting the physical, psycho-social and spiritual elements.  In this capacity, Mrs Vella had the opportunity to give speeches abroad on the importance of awareness and prevention of cancer.

In 2023, Mrs Vella was awarded an Honorary Life Membership by the National Council of Women (Malta) for her inspiring work with all strata of Maltese society, especially the more needy and vulnerable, through her activities.

In that same year, Mrs Vella was awarded the recognition of ‘Ġieħ iż-Żejtun’, by the local authorities of her hometown. This honour was bestowed on Mrs Miriam Vella for the Service she rendered along the years to her immediate community in the city of ‘Żejtun’, located at the South Eastern side of Malta.

In July 2023, the First Lady was decorated with the ‘Grand Cross of the Order of Beneficence’ of the Hellenic Republic.
